Abstract
Hugh Lewis Grogan Jr. was the first African American council member for the city of Marietta, Georgia, serving from 1978-1982, as well as president of the Cobb County Branch of the NAACP for two terms, 1976 and 1978.
Description
Hugh Lewis Grogan Jr. was born on January 12, 1937. He graduated from Lemon Street High School in Marietta, Georgia, and studied at St. John's University in New York, New York, and Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Grogan was the first African American council member to be elected in Marietta, serving from 1978 to 1982. He held leadership positions in a number of organizations, including the Southern Leadership Conference, Residents Working for Georgia, Inc., and the Fort Hill Tenant Association. He was also a board member of the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Arts and Cobb Housing, Inc. Grogan also served as the president of the Cobb County Branch of the NAACP in 1976 and 1978. Hugh Grogan died on July 28, 2009. He had three children: Hugh Lewis Grogan III, Reece Grogan, and Lorianne Smith-Robinson.
