Abstract
Sound recording digitized from an audiocassette of an interview between Gordon Kemp, Hugh L. Gordon, and Randall Patton, Prof. of History at Kennesaw State University. Kemp discusses his childhood in northwest Atlanta near the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as his employment at the Lockheed-Georgia Company. He recounts the difficulties that he faced in the workplace as an African American in the 1960s.

Sound recording digitized from an audiocassette of an interview between Gordon Kemp, Hugh L. Gordon, and Randall Patton, Prof. of History at Kennesaw State University. Kemp discusses his childhood in northwest Atlanta near the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as his employment at the Lockheed-Georgia Company. He recounts the difficulties that he faced in the workplace as an African American in the 1960s.
Gordon Kemp was born on February 9, 1925, in Atlanta, Georgia. As a child, he lived with his parents near the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology. At the age of 15, Kemp baked bread at the campus bakery. At 18, Kemp joined the U.S. Navy and served for 3 years. During part of this time he was attached to the USS Leedstown. After leaving the navy, Kemp returned to high school to complete his degree. He earned a degree from Morehouse College and taught school after graduation. In 1953 Kemp joined the Lockheed-Georgia Company as part of their structure assembly area. After the plant was integrated in the 1960s, he received a promotion to a management-level position. Gordon Kemp died on April 22, 2007.
